Christopher Columbus didn’t really discover America. He landed somewhere in the Caribbean Islands. He didn’t set out to prove that the Earth was round. People knew that the Earth wasn’t flat as early as the sixth century B.C.
The big question for Columbus, it turns out, was not the shape of the Earth but the size of the ocean he was planning to cross. He sailed west in search of a passage to India where the riches of gold, pearls and spices awaited.
Some biographers say he was a bad man who committed atrocities to the natives which he encountered.
He ended up making four voyages to the New World. Never did make it India.
Oh for four.
